Chapter Four

Angelina stared at the reports from the forensic department. She wasn't surprised when the second report confirmed the accelerant. It was gasoline. She couldn't shake off the feeling that the gasoline was connected with the fire. She thought about how the plastic container wasn't in the garage area of the house.

"Angelina, Chief Alex asked me to call you," Danielle said.

"Okay, thank you," Angelina said as she stood and headed for the chief's office. She entered and met Chief Alex and Detective Rodgers there.

"Detective Angelina, please take a seat," Chief Alex said with a stern look.

Angelina had never seen him that way before. Chief Alex usually had a nondescript look, but she knew there was something up at that moment. Angelina took a seat beside Detective Rodgers. She wondered what he had told Chief Alex.

"It's about the fire incident," Chief Alex started.

"Okay, what about it?" Angelina asked. She knew without a doubt at this point that the meeting had Detective Rodgers’ influence written all over it.

"I want you to stop whatever you're doing on it and focus on other cases," Chief Alex said, and Angelina's eyes widened.

"What? Why would you want me to stop? I thought I was given free reign to do this?" Angelina blurted out.

"Yes, I gave you free reign to find out if it was an arson before I knew that you were handling this case based on sentiment," Chief Alex retorted to Angelina.

"Sentiment? What sentiment are we talking about?" Angelina asked not knowing what the chief meant.

"I found out about what happened to your parents," Chief Alex started as he sighed. Angelina was shocked and she wondered how he had been able to find out. She turned toward Rodgers. She was intrigued about why Rodgers was bent on yanking her off the case.

"I'm doing this not because of what happened to me twenty years ago," Angelina said as she returned her attention to Chief Alex.

"You are telling me that your eagerness toward this case has nothing to do with what happened to your parents back then," Chief Alex said as he held Angelina's gaze.

"Are you sure about that? This case is similar to what happened to your parents back then," he asked with suspicion.

Angelina thought about this for a while and realized that her sudden interest in the case did stem from what had happened to her own family. She realized she couldn't deny it any longer.

"Chief, it's not what you think," Angelina said when she realized the tight corner Detective Rodgers had pushed her into. For a second, she wondered why he was hell-bent on ensuring that she wasn't involved with the case.

"I'm doing this because everything seems fishy with that fire. The Murray family perished horribly, and up until now, their children haven't shown," Angelina said as she recalled the last piece of information she had gotten.

"They told us they were far away, and it would take them a while before they get here," Rodgers said with a pointed look.

"It would give us the advantage to know what is going on before their arrival.
